About the Initiative

Image The Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) was formed to help the cement industry to address the challenges of sustainable development. The business leaders of a group of major cement companies lead the initiative.

Its purpose is to:

  • explore what sustainable development means for the cement industry
  • identify and facilitate actions that companies can take as a group and individually to accelerate the move towards sustainable development
  • provide a framework through which other cement companies can participate
  • provide a framework for working with external stakeholders

Program Status

Major reports were completed following an intense 3-year period of research, stakeholder consultation and analysis. Following the public release of the Agenda for Action in Paris (July 2002), the members of the program moved forward with an ambitious 5-year set of task forces and projects dealing with
  1. Climate protection and CO2 management,
  2. Responsible use of fuel and materials,
  3. Employee health and safety,
  4. Emission monitoring and reporting,
  5. Local impacts on land and communities, and
  6. Reporting and Communication

to make their commitments a reality. An interim progress report was released in June 2005 followed by a full progress report in June 2008.

Stakeholder Dialogues

To compile part of our research and gauge opinions on critical issues, we organized a series of stakeholder dialogues in developed and developing countries. The results of these dialogues are posted here.

Project Governance

The project was initiated by 10 cement companies, under the auspices of the WBCSD. Since July 2002, seven more companies have joined the Initiative - from India (2), Greece, Portugal, Spain, the United States and Ireland. Together, this group of companies represents more than half of the cement manufacturing capacity outside of China.
