Effective management of carbon dioxide emissions is key to climate protection. The CSI has made steady progress in the last five years in tackling the industry’s carbon footprint, with consistent yearly improvements in 'emissions efficiency', i.e. reducing their CO2 emissions per tonne of cement products. Starting from 2006 data, all members have been required to have their CO2 data audited and verified by an independent third party. Headlines:
The 10 core members are now reporting fully according to the CO2 Accounting and Reporting Protocol and have made substantial reductions in specific emissions, with newer members working towards the same goal. All CSI members are committed to working towards further significant specified reductions during the next five years and beyond. CSI members are now dedicating significant time and resources to the goal of engaging cement companies in emerging economies in the CO2 management process – which is where the vast bulk of future growth in global cement production will occur. Data (reported 2006 unless otherwised specified)
Footnoteα Following limitations on data reporting, this figure reflects 2005 data as reported by 17 CSI member companies under the ‘Getting the Numbers Right’ (GNR) initiative. β Under the CSI Charter signed by all members, from the date they join the CSI members are given four years to achieve the commitments made. For this progress report 11 out of 18 CSI members were obligated under the CSI Charter to report these KPIs.
